Special features of Anamur

Caretta Caretta

In the Mediterranean Sea of Anamur, the Caretta Caretta or Loggerheads mate from late April to early June. The thirteen Kilometers long main beach of Anamur is the central nesting space. The nesting season is at its peak in June and July, but this depends on the nesting beach. The nesting season lasts until October. In 2008 young scientists from the University of Mersin counted and protected 808 Nests. Around 55.000 young Sea Turtles reached the sea. The association for the Protection of Environment and Nature and the support of Tourism in Anamur organized the protection program.

In 2006 Anamur was connected to Canalization, there is nearly no Industry: the water is still in a wonderful condition. The mountains around Anamur build an obstacle to mass tourism. Until now small pensions and hotels provide pleasant accommodation for individual tourism. Only Turkish tourists and a few Insiders from outside of Turkey come here in summer. Beside the beautiful beaches, the rich cultural heritage and the stunning ecological and topographical diversity attract them.

The first historical tracks of Anamur are dated to the 8 Century B.C. About 20.000 people should have leaved in the settlement of Anemorium. Its impressive ruins can be visited in Anamur. Southwest of Anamur the military fortresses were built. From this southern point of the Turkish Mediterranean coast the whole marine traffic was controlled. Since the 13 century Anamur is under Turkish control. The “Mamure Kalesi” is one of the oldest and best-preserved fortresses at the southern Turkish coast.

The fauna of Anamur is impressive: Mediterranean crawls, the rare Trionyx (Nil Turtle), the “Testudo graece anamurensis”, and a turtle only living in Anamur, a nearly unknown butterfly valley…

The mountains and villages around Anamur are another stunning attraction. The main roads were fixed with asphalt two years ago. A daily trip to this nature paradise inside of the Taurus Mountains will be one of the excursions.
