Old Visions - New Images

Creative Strategies from Turkey

Under the title 'Old Visions - New Images' the association develops a set of activities for the period 2007/2008.

These activities pursue the goal of making contemporary, cultural tendencies from Turkey accessible to a broader public in the worldwide framework.

The activities are in particular to provide an overview of the cultural developments in New and Old Media.

The project `Creative Strategies from Turkey' consists of a package of exhibitions, colloquiums, lectures, one workshop and one publication with different focal points.

The general tendency of these activities is shaped by the slogan: not seduced by technology, design or fashion trends, but looking after the possibilities of humans, their creativity and culture in their world.

Current examples

For the German weeks in the fall of 2008 in Istanbul, Diyalog is planning an exhibition of contemporary Art with contributions by selected German Artists on the topic of the fall of the wall.

For the Frankfurt Book Fair 2008, a publication with Turkish caricatures and an accompanying exhibition is planned.

Within the scope of friendly relationships between the cities Istanbul and Berlin we are preparing exhibitions, symposia and workshops for 2009 with events both in Istanbul and Berlin, in cooperation with the Foundation Starke in Berlin.

For the occasion of the European Cultural Capital Istanbul 2010, diyalog's team is arranging a thematic video workshop series that is focusing on the urban developments and the different living conditions in Istanbul in cooperation with Anadolu Kultur. This will, among others, be published on diyalog's website in the scope of entropyTV.

Taboo and Avant-garde

The initiative `Taboo and Avant-garde' is an extended section and an historical addition of the main activities under the title `New Images - Old Visions – Creative Strategies from Turkey'. This section presents in four independent exhibitions selected historical examples of cultural initiatives from the Ottoman-Empire and Turkey. Subject of the exhibitions are

• The Image of the Orient at the beginning of the 19th Century

• Satire at the end of the Ottoman Empire

• Film as instrument for innovation, reflection and provocation

• Recent views of the EU in Turkish media

Fragments, visuals, historical documents and informative text panels will illustrate and describe these subjects in separated exhibitions which extend and complete the main initiative.

Bulusma Noktasi (Meeting Point)

Bulusma Noktasi (Meeting Point) was design by Ece Pazarbasi and it focusses at federating local, national and international communities from both rural and urban areas, with different social, religious and cultural backgrounds, around issues on art, creativity and cultural heritage through educational, intercultural, interdisciplinary & socialising civil actions.

The project will use various creative art disciplines to harmonise differences, raising respectful awareness on self & each other’s rights, duties and on the complementary nature of differences, in an innovative manner.
